Dust Devils dance a macabre dervish
Tumbleweed twists in torment
Ghosts of the Disappeared stalk the streets of Death
Screams of silence fill the graveyard of the Abandoned
Gates creak open with unearthly screams
Come down to the Graveyard
Coffins spill their bone chilling secrets

Kolmanskop / Kolmanskuppe, Namibia, Africa

Where: Namib Desert, Namibia, Africa
Facts: Founded by a transport driver called Johnny Coleman. Trapped by a sand storm, he abandoned his ox wagon in the desert which became the settlement of Kolmanskop / Kolmanskuppe.
In 1908 a diamond was found here by an employee of the German railway inspector. Germany declared the area a Sperrgebiet (translated – Prohibited Area) and started exploiting the desert as a diamond field.
Driven by the wealth of diamonds and adventure, a town was formed that included modern amenities like a hospital, ballroom, power station, school, bowling alley, theatre, casino, ice factory as well as the first x-ray station in the southern hemisphere and the first tram in Africa.
World War 1 put the town into a sharp decline.
In 1954 the once diamond-rich town was suddenly abandoned and became a ghost town.
Tell me what happened to this ghost town…

I smiled a little as I watched the black cloud in the distance. Having a front row seat to one of Mother Nature’s best shows thrilled me. As it got closer I wondered about my animals, and started to feel the dust coat my eyes. Now unable to blink I pondered all those who considered our Mother gentle and yielding. I know there will be no mercy here.

Can greed bring down the vengeance of Gods? I think so, I believe that’s why the desert swallowed our town after the massacre. We lived and breathed diamonds, shiny pieces of hope and wealth, until the mines stopped producing. Then they became commodities to kill for, and one horrid night the blood flowed as factions murdered to control the last supply of gems. The bodies littered the streets that night, but now they’re buried. Covered by the sandstorm that raged through the next day, wiping out the town. Yes, the bodies are buried, too bad their ghosts remain…
The storm raged. I took another halting step, but I knew I had no more to give. I must have run miles, but I couldn’t run anymore. I sat on a damp mossy rock. I waited.
The shadows marched around me with every breath of wind in the trees. The frigid rain continued to knife down without mercy for the fallen. I was rewrapping the blood-covered strip of cloth around my forearm, when I heard a noise underneath the battering force of the storm.
I closed my eyes. I allowed my head to sag forward and my shoulders to hunch in fatigue.
When my best friend, Beth Ann, reached me, there was nothing left of my control. My need was great. I had tried to keep her safe.
“Thank you for this meal I’m about to receive, and bless the human who birthed her, that there may be many more to harvest.”
I love abandoned ghost towns and places where nature decides to take over again!
Your talent of writing, your grasp on the languages engages your readers so well that a person just can’t stop turning the page.
Laughter once peeled through these rooms, much as the paint now peels from these forgotten walls. Sea green, crystalline blue – the sparkle of a lovers paradise filled with hope, and not much more. One lover lost to the atrocity of greed, the other waiting in hope against the ravages of time. As the many grains gathered, the longing soul aged and began to wither. Thousands upon thousands of churned granules left the coast to stand sentry in her stead, awaiting forever the return of the other.

Nina! 🙂
What a heart-ravaging piece!
You are entered into “The Abandoned & The Disappeared”…
Good Luck 😉
Remember to come back tomorrow for another entry.
Happy Hopping!!
lol – I believe my profile says something like ‘writes soul rending snippets of despair…’ I’m happy not to be fooling myself. And I’ll be back each day, even if only to view the beautiful images you post and learn their history.
Thank you for the entry, and Happy Hopping to you as well!! 🙂
My entry:
‘Yes, the drifts churn…no more than your mind when I told you we must abandon our memories. But your sideways glance spoke of things gone barren, and only then did I realize where I had gone wrong. Arid thoughts, they betrayed me; how could I have known our oceans were left to dry? Under plaster-cracked walls, you long since left me, leaving new castles for me to build in the sand.’
Don’t know if this counts, Kim – it’s my brand of prose more than the ‘account’ of what happened in the pic – but I belted it out in two minutes so forgive my recklessness of your rules (I’m so bad at following ‘rules’) lol 🙂
It definitely counts! Congrats on being the first entrant to “The Abandoned & The Disappeared”! 🙂
Good Luck 😉
Remember to come back tomorrow for another chance to enter…
Happy Hopping!!
